Happy birthday VAT – here’s how not to pay you

“Swap cereal bars, which attract VAT, for flapjacks at zero rate

Swap chocolate covered shortbread, which attracts VAT, for millionaires’ shortbread. Even though this might seem even more luxurious, complete with a caramel layer, it does not attract the tax.

Swap raisins and nuts from the snack aisle, for the same products packaged from the baking aisle. If they look like they’re destined for the oven they don’t attract the tax.

Swap ready-made popcorn for popcorn that you need to microwave yourself to save the 20pc mark up.

Swap gingerbread men with chocolate decorations for gingerbread men with just a few dots of chocolate for eyes and buttons to save the tax.”

Thanks to The Telegraph for this VAT-saving advice.
