Politics vs. Value of Raising Personal Tax to 50%

One of the main political parties has announced its plan to raise the top rate of personal tax to 50%, if it wins the 2015 election. As a tax barrister looking just at the technical angle, and leaving politics aside, I find it interesting that the issue of value for money, what a person or society gets for the tax, is often overlooked. Or at best tax is simply treated as a sort of huge money box for the government’s global spending. Almost as if the rate of tax is believed in as innately good vs. bad as an article of political faith. Odd that assessing value for money is seldom applied to the tax side of the tax-spend balance.
