As a tax barrister I have an interest in human rights to help clients. So a radio piece today by an MP seeking to amend how the Human Rights Act works was intriguing. A big complaint some MPs have is about how the courts implement human rights laws, as if it supposedly favoured certain groups. But the courts can only operate with the laws Parliament has passed and in accordance with the UK’s international obligations. So if Parliament, as a whole and not just some groups, is really unhappy about how legislation is working then it is up to Parliament to change the law.
