UK Selling Visas on eBay?

In another “What do we get for our tax?” piece I was interested as a tax barrister in proposals for the UK to auction off visas to wealthy visitors to settle. Criticised by some as an Ebay culture. In evidence to MPs the migration advisory committee said “It may very well be that we should be auctioning some of these slots…There should be a proper discussion about it. Equally it may well be that we should be letting people in if they endow…[a certain university]…with £10m”. An unfortunate example, after one college’s links to money from the ex-Gaddafi regime. But why should the government discriminate in favour of certain groups and against everyone else? Will the government have a free market and let ordinary people buy and sell UK passports on the internet? No more silly then selling off visas to the highest bidder. Or then again maybe, just maybe, the UK could try to have a sensible and fair to all policy – or is that just too radical?
