Tax on Banks – Smoke and Mirrors

UK banks paid a high figure in tax, according to a report from a big consultancy firm. Well they would say that wouldn’t they? But as a tax barrister I am worried about the multi-£billions of taxpayers money used to prop up the banks’ casino gambling when it all went wrong. But for years before the banks had trousered the profits. A re-working of “profit and loss” into “bank keeps profit, taxpayer gets loss”. That’s without adding into the mix the seemingly endless PPI mis-selling scandals, LIBOR manipulation, the list goes on and on.
