UK Taxpayers Paying for Home Office Border Mistakes

In another of my “What do UK taxpayers actually get for their tax money?” posts, I note the Home Office is to pay a US company £224 m after it illegally ended a contract for border security checks.

Firstly, who knew the UK border checks? (proper ones anyway).
Secondly, wasn’t it easier to just have handed out free money to every visitor ? (legal or illegal they are all visitors).
Thirdly, why is the UK taxpayer made to suffer by picking up the bill for this shambles?
