Tax vs. Spend at Party Conference Season

The political party conference season has been disappointing on tax policy, with the usual tax vs. spend promises and threats. Each of the main parties tries to bribe its own core supporters with lower taxes and/or more public spending, at the expense of more taxes and/or lower spending for other people. The only difference is where on the tax vs. spend grove each part is stuck. Value for money, what it is  taxpayers actually get in return for their money, is pushed to the back.
