HMRC published statistics this week on the numbers of different types of tax and taxpayers. For 2014-15 the number of VAT registered traders has climbed back to over 2 million, for the first time since 2007-08 and before the recession. The number of people paying income tax for 2014-15 was 29.8, still down on the 32.5 million pre-recession peak in 2007-08.
