The European Commission has given a progress report on its competition and tax investigations into US multi-nationals Apple, Starbucks, Amazon, along with FIAT. The commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said she would not be able to finish the investigation this second quarter as planned. She is quoted as saying this is because “It is clear that obtaining information is both challenging and time consuming. We do not necessarily get the information the first time or the second time. Therefore we will not meet the first deadline to be done by the end of the second quarter. We will do our best” and “I will not give deadlines for the finalisation of these cases”. No surprises at the delay, these things are very complex. But the competition commissioner is showing a resolve and determination to get to the bottom of things which national tax authorities might take notice of.
