VAT and Airport Shops

Airport shops charging the same prices to travellers going outside the EU as inside, then claiming back the VAT from HMRC for outside-EU travellers, are technically speaking doing nothing wrong tax-wise. The problem is more with consumer pricing, data protection, advertising and bad public relations. Customers feel they are being misled about prices and the real reason they are asked to show their boarding passes.
