The Labour leadership race seems to me to be reverting back to its 1970s core of tax and 1990s waste. Remember tax is only one side of the equation, it is what people get for their money that is just as important. After a devastating election defeat it is no surprise a party turns inwards and seeks to comfort itself with extreme versions of its core beliefs, regardless of what the electorate want. The same thing happened to the Tories in the 1990s and Labour in the 1980s. So the Labour leadership election campaign looks like a race back to the failed tax and waste policies of the 1970s, plus some new-Labour 1990s waste added in. Not deliberate waste of course, it’s just the more money any government has to spray around the more money tends to get wasted.
