• Responding to the government’s autumn statement, on tax and spending, the Labour shadow chancellor John McDonnell yesterday cited Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book regarding the Tory party courting Chinese investment.
• ‘We must learn to do economic work from all who know how. No matter who they are, we must esteem them as teachers, learning from them respectfully and conscientiously. But we must not pretend to know what we do not know‘.
• But the reference, or joke – that it was ironic that the capitalist Tory party was now dependent on nominally communist China – was maybe too subtle for the usual Commons barracking.
