Car Tax Dodging Made Easier by Government Online ‘Savings’

• The government scrapping the old tried and tested paper tax disc for only an online version continues to cause problems.
• The reason behind the switch was supposed cost savings of £10m. When the new version of vehicle excise duty, VED, was first brought in the scandal was of drivers being over-charged through having to pay for whole months and not getting tax already paid back when a car was sold.
• Now it emerges cases of dodging VED altogether have soared because the online system makes evasion easier. There are now 560,000 vehicles unlicenced, compared to just 210,000 in 2013.
• The tax loss has risen to £80m from £35m a year.
