EU Willing to Investigate HMRC Tax Deal with Google

The EU Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, has said she is willing to look at HMRC’s recent special tax deal with Google, to see if it breached competition rules, if contacted. She reportedly said that the EU could use state aid tools to look at individual companies to see if more selective advantages were being given out in the form of tax rulings. Some have calculated the special deal gives Google an effective tax rate of only 3%. The deal might amount to illegal state aid if there is an EU investigation and a finding against them.
