The Government inspired Parker review into ethnic diversity in UK boardrooms and top companies, “Beyond One by ’21”, has published its interim report. The report is very laudable for the groups it does recognise as ethnic minorities. But the British Empire-Commonwealth approach to defining ethnicity is outdated.
As might be expected the Irish as an ethnic minority are excluded, their very existence as a racial or national group air-brushed out. The same goes for the Polish, Rumanians and Turks; indeed any of our ethnic minority friends, neighbours or work colleagues from Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Caucasus, Near East, etc.
So the message of the report for the excluded ethnic minorities is: don’t bother, you don’t count, you need not apply.
